Building the Waiongana Vision:
From Mountain to Sea
Welcome to the dedicated page for the Waiongana Catchment Group, the latest community-led initiative under the Taranaki Catchment Communities (TCC) umbrella. Following TCC’s mission to lead, engage, and mobilise our region towards a more sustainable future, we are embarking on a journey to restore and protect the Waiongana catchment.
Our Vision: A Systems Approach
The development of this catchment is driven by a "Mountain to Sea" philosophy. We recognise that the pristine environment of the mounga offers a unique opportunity to rethink our human behaviours to lift the health of the entire catchment as it flows through our lands and out to the coast.
This is not a top-down project; it is a ground-up, community-led movement. We want to bridge the gap between our urban centres like Inglewood (Kōhanga Moa) and our surrounding rural and agricultural sectors. By bringing together mana whenua, farmers, urban residents, schools, and local businesses, we are fostering a self-sustaining culture of environmental stewardship where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Where We Are Now: The Foundation Phase
Our focus has been on building a solid foundation. Sarah Lucas (People Place Future Consulting) has been engaged as our Independent Coordinator and Strategic Facilitator to act as a "connector" for the community.
We have already reached a significant milestone by successfully holding initial meetings with Puketapu and Pukerangiora hapū. Both hapū have expressed their interest in being involved in setting the vision for the Waiongana.
Over the coming months, we are hoping to move towards an active, functioning group.
Join the Movement
This project is a "slow burn" – we are starting with a committed core group and will continue to grow as we demonstrate the impact of collective action. Whether you are a farmer interested in "experts on-tap" for technical advice or an urban resident wanting to help restore our local nature, there is a place for you here.
Together, we can ensure the Waiongana thrives for generations to come. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming community workshops and forums!
